What. The. Eff. Hollywood.

YOU KNOW HOW YOU KEEP MAKING MOVIES ABOUT BROWN PEOPLE AND THEN CAST WHITE PEOPLE TO PLAY THEM?

STOP PLZ. KTHXBAI

Seriously, this is so not cool. How do you take a television show that was so full — FULL — of Asian imagery, mythology. The clothing, the writing, the people, the buildings, the music, the entire mythology — REINCARNATION!!!! THE ELEMENTS!!! About the only stuff in the entire show that was not based on Tibetan or Chinese or Indian culture was the Water Tribe, and they were based on Inuit culture! How do you take that and cast white actors to play every main role!?

The only actor I recognize there is Jackson Rathbone, and I love him — he's an awesome actor and adorable to boot — but, um, Sokka's kinda brown. And while I am all for color-blind casting and all when a film has no real cultural bias one way or another, taking a world pulled straight outta Asia and filling it full of white actors is seriously offensive. Especially when there are a ton of Asian-American actors who can only find work if they want to play Asian Gangster 2 or Chinese Delivery Boy, or if they move to Hong Kong. Every single movie that comes out of Hollywood features at least one white leading actor (unless it was made by Tyler Perry).

Could they not give two — TWO — roles in the "Avatar" movie to people who actually LOOK like the characters? I could have lived with a white Aang and Zuko (but not Jesse McCartney, ew), even though the characters are clearly from countries based on Asian cultures, because you could argue that the characters are ambiguous-looking in the cartoon. But Sokka and Katara are clearly not white. Come on.

It was bad enough when they turned a story about a group of Asian-American kids who fleece Vegas into "21" (almost all-white cast), it was bad enough when they trotted Angelina Jolie out in brownface to do "A Mighty Heart," and it was bad enough that "The Forbidden Kingdom" was all about how a white kid saves China and then Chinatown. (And I liked those movies, too, but come on.)

It's bad enough that "Avatar" was, like, the only cartoon with Asian characters who aren't offensive (in fact, the only other one I can think of is "Shaolin Showdown," which shows us that Chinese people are short, bald, bucktoothed, confused by the modern world and talk with funny accents). It's bad enough that shows set in Asian worlds — like "Firefly," where people speak Chinese — have no Asian main characters (and again, I loooooved "Firefly," but way to appropriate, Whedon).

Do they really need to screw this up, too? Can't we just have one freaking movie** where we can see people like us as something other than the sidekick or the stereotype?

I know it's just a movie based on a kid's show and unimportant compared to what's going on in the world today, but "Avatar" is probably my favorite show of all time, and I'm so, so disappointed to see that the movie is going to be all about white kids doing kung fu in an Asian-inspired world while we're invisible again. Yay.

I think I'm going to go to bed before I work myself up to tears.

** Made here in the U.S., not imported from Hong Kong or Japan and horribly dubbed with the worst voice actors available.

EDIT: This made me feel better. And NOW I am going to bed while I'm still giggling at it.
